Exploration Targets

The Independent Geologist has assessed Maroon and Barney View as highly prospective Tenements, having identified multiple Exploration Targets for thermal coal in the Walloon Coal Measures where there is good potential for defining a coal resource.

Based on detailed geological modelling and an assessment of the geology of the area, the Company has identified two Exploration Target areas in the western portion of Maroon and in Barney View as follows:

  • Rathdowney Prospect – in the north western part of the Maroon Tenement where the Walloon Coal Measures extend over a strike length of approximately 5km; and
  • Barney View Prospect – in the northern portion of Barney View and extending into Maroon.

The Barney View Tenement has been granted by the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy. The Company will initially focus on continuing its data modelling activities in order to identify target sites for a 2D seismic survey. The Company will also continue to review the available data on the Maroon Tenement, which is currently at application stage, to assist in determining initial sites for drilling at both the Barney View and Rathdowney Prospects. Upon the granting of Maroon, Carabella intends to conduct a comprehensive exploration program over the combined Barney View-Maroon Tenement area with the objective to delineate an economic thermal coal resource.

Geology and Previous Exploration

The Walloon Coal Measures are known to occur in the western part of Maroon and in Barney View, which overlie the Marbug Formation. An anticlinal structure affects the strata in the western part of Maroon and the Marbug Formation occurs in the core of this structure. As a result, the overlying Walloon Coal Measures outcrop in two areas, representing the Barney View Prospect and the Rathdowney Prospect noted above.

Although historical exploration in the Clarence-Moreton Basin has been limited, a number of companies have conducted regional programs of mapping, sampling and drilling over the general area of the Tenements. This includes a 40 hole drilling program comprising 1,993 metres of open hole drilling and 160 metres of core drilling with hole depths ranging between 12 metres and 108 metres. These holes identified a preliminary deposit known as the Barney View Deposit. In this area one principal coal horizon is recognised, comprising up to 15 separate coal bands with a cumulative coal thickness of between 2.7 metres and 5.9 metres over vertical intervals of up to 22.9 metres. The deposit has not been developed to a JORC standard and historical coal quality analysis suggests a bright low ash thermal coal. These results are representative of the Barney View Prospect identified above.
